AI startup Mistral has introduced Devstral, its latest open-source AI model designed specifically for coding tasks. Announced in collaboration with All Hands AI, Devstral is available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, allowing unrestricted commercial use.
According to Mistral, Devstral outperforms other open models—such as Google’s Gemma 3 27B and DeepSeek’s V3—on SWE-Bench Verified, a benchmark for evaluating software engineering capabilities. The model is optimized for navigating complex codebases, editing multiple files, and powering AI coding agents.

In a blog post, Mistral notes that Devstral is compatible with agent frameworks like OpenHands and SWE-Agent, and can run locally on consumer-grade hardware, including an Nvidia RTX 4090 or a Mac with 32GB of RAM—making it suitable for on-device deployments.
This release comes as AI coding assistants are seeing a surge in popularity. Tech companies like JetBrains, Google, and OpenAI have recently launched their own AI models tailored for development, reflecting a growing trend toward AI-augmented programming—even as concerns persist around code quality and security risks.
Devstral follows Mistral’s earlier foray into AI-assisted development with Codestral, which was restricted from commercial use. In contrast, Devstral is being billed as a “research preview” and is now available on platforms like Hugging Face and through Mistral’s API, priced at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.30 per million output tokens.
While Devstral clocks in at 24 billion parameters, Mistral says it’s already working on a larger, more advanced coding model to be released in the coming weeks.
Founded in 2023, Mistral has quickly gained momentum as a frontier AI lab. Backed by investors like General Catalyst, the company has raised over €1.1 billion ($1.24 billion) and serves major clients including BNP Paribas, AXA, and Mirakl.
This marks Mistral’s third product launch this month, following the release of Mistral Medium 3, a versatile general-purpose model, and Le Chat Enterprise, a business-focused AI assistant platform with integration capabilities for services like Gmail and SharePoint.
